As you are already fully aware, I am kind of obsessed with surfing and the culture and lifestyle that follows with it. I have always wanted to learn but never really had the opportunity to do so. Until now that is. I found out this summer that my university, University of the Arts London actually have a surfing club. As bizarre as you think that may sound as you can't actually surf in London, it still gives you the opportunity to learn and train to be a surfer. We are able to have very valid training sessions that works on our strength, fitness and balance. Then comes our trips that we have four times a year to various different locations around the UK and also one abroad.
I have just come back from my first ever surfing trip to Newquay, Cornwall and never in a million years did I expect to come back and say I actually stood up and rode some waves. The lesson we had was so productive and spent the majority of it in the sea actually catching waves. We were told the basics of techniques, the wrongs and the rights and how to get from laying on the board to on your feet. It was a lot harder than I expected, I mean I grew up watching surf films and they all make it look so easy! However, when you are actually on the wave, you're going so fast that trying to get your balance is so hard but I managed to do it a few times and it felt amazing the first time I stood up! From a past experience of nearly drowning in the sea to then having a fear of it for a few years, I did freak myself out a couple of times but with more lessons and more time in the sea, I will gradually overcome my fear and get more comfortable. Here's to finally living out one of my dreams!
